What is compassion? If looking at the first googled definition of compassion it is described as having sympathy or concern for the sufferings of others. Other descriptions are a social feeling that motivates people to relieve any physical, mental or emotional pain for themselves and other people.
It appears that that definition can be culturally impacted as well.
How then, can we show compassion towards ourselves?
Think back to when you were younger. During moments when you felt pain or hurt, who consoled you? Who provided comfort to you?
Sometimes, if we can’t place a person with those times, there may have been more moments where we were alone and had to self-soothe, or at least try to. This is sometimes impacting our ability to feel compassionate towards ourselves and others because at pivotal moments in our own growth and development, people who should have been there were not.
If you did have someone who helped to ease your pain or provide comfort when you were hurt (either physically or emotionally) do you practice compassion today in that same way towards yourself and others?
Life is filled with so many distractions, chores, tasks, goals to set, etc. that finding compassion for ourselves and others is sometimes the last thing we are focused on. Ultimately, it is something that we should prioritize because in this way we are supporting our bodies and minds through active attention to our needs, giving grace when we and others make mistakes, and learning to accept life for what it is and finding joy in that.
Take a moment and think about what compassion may mean for you-regardless of the above referenced definitions. A little focused attention may go a long way.
